Senior Underwriter - Underwriting Specialist (Excess Casualty)

The Senior Underwriter at James River Insurance is responsible for selecting, reviewing, modeling, analyzing, and underwriting complex insurance submissions, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and standards. The role involves determining appropriate terms, conditions, and premiums for risks, responding to brokers, and supporting team members. It requires developing strong broker relationships, negotiating placements, and contributing to team training and mentorship.

Responsibilities

• Analyze new business opportunities and develop renewal strategies
• Attain quote, premium and division goals as assigned
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers
• Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to negotiate with brokers on placements
• Assist the Underwriting Manager/Division Manager with training, mentoring, and on-boarding of new employees

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years underwriting experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus lines
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
• Ability to effectively evaluate, model, determine coverage, rate, document, quote and bind accounts
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Internet researching
