Staff Data Engineer, Financial Data Operations

Root is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead financial data operations, including commissions payments and incentive programs, within their Data Platform team. The role involves driving technical initiatives, ensuring data pipeline reliability, and partnering with cross-functional teams to support high-stakes financial workflows.

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: $168,600 - $215,000 (Eligible for Competitive Bonus & Equity)

Responsibilities

• Partner with Finance, Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Insurance teams to set strategic direction.
• Identify and promote technical initiatives to improve product, system, and team effectiveness.
• Coach and guide engineers on experiments and projects aligned with strategic goals.
• Contribute code regularly to advance team impact.
• Lead incident response efforts to improve system resiliency.
• Coordinate with Staff Engineers to establish standards and best practices.

Requirements

• 8+ years as a software engineer.
• Expertise in Python, Terraform, SQL, and Spark.
• Experience building large-scale finance, payments, and commissions systems.
• Expertise in Cloud Architecture, preferably AWS.
• Proven leadership in projects involving multiple teams.
• Excellent communication skills with engineering and senior business leaders.
