Principal Security Engineer, Product & AI

Marqeta is seeking a Principal Security Engineer to lead security engineering across product security, AI security, and infrastructure security. The role involves threat modeling, security architecture, and developing security controls for payment platforms and AI systems.

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: $218k–$321k

Responsibilities

• Lead product security engineering for the payment platform, including threat modeling, security architecture review, secure SDLC practices, and API security.
• Help develop and mature the AI security program, including genAI controls, securing ML pipelines, and collaborating with the Model Risk Office.
• Provide security architecture oversight across infrastructure and enterprise security—endpoint, network, VPN, and security controls.

Requirements

• 10+ years of security engineering experience with leadership across multiple security domains or equivalent education and experience.
• Deep product security expertise: threat modeling, security architecture review, secure code review, API security, authentication/authorization, secure SDLC.
• Interest or experience in AI/ML security, understanding risks like adversarial attacks, model poisoning, prompt injection, data privacy, AI supply chain threats.
• Broad security knowledge across infrastructure and enterprise security—endpoint, network, identity, cloud security.
• Experience with cloud-native environments (AWS preferred) and AI/ML services (e.g., Bedrock, SageMaker).
• Proven ability to build security frameworks, tools, and programs from scratch.
• Strong programming skills in Python, Java, Go, or similar, with ability to review code in multiple languages.
• Experience with security assessment methodologies and risk management frameworks.
• Knowledge of compliance frameworks relevant to financial services (PCI DSS, SOX, SOC2, NIST CSF).
• Ability to communicate security risks to technical and executive audiences.
