Software Engineer (Backend, Distributed Systems)

Censys is seeking a Software Engineer (Backend, Distributed Systems) to develop scalable services, APIs, frameworks, and internal tools that process large datasets and ensure high availability. The role supports Censys's mission to provide real-time Internet intelligence and threat insights, operating distributed infrastructure for Internet-wide scanning.

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: $120,000 - $169,000 + bonus and equity

Responsibilities

• Build large scale, real-time services and applications leveraging massive datasets.
• Develop tooling, libraries, frameworks, and services supporting security, research, and data platform initiatives.
• Productionize prototypes into reliable internal tools, services, or platform capabilities.
• Participate in planning and technical discussions with engineering and product teams.
• Develop and maintain systems such as data pipelines, messaging systems, databases, caching layers, and cloud or on-prem services.
• Collaborate with Machine Learning Engineers and Security Researchers to implement solutions.

Requirements

• 3+ years of software engineering experience building distributed systems.
• Experience with object-oriented programming, specifically Go.
• Experience with at least one cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience or familiarity with message queue technologies (AWS Kinesis, Google Pub/Sub, Kafka).
• Experience working with databases (BigTable, Cloud Spanner, HBase, Cassandra).
• Understanding of core distributed systems concepts such as scalability, fault tolerance, and reliability.
• Familiarity with using AI.
• Ability to write understandable, testable, and maintainable code.
• Strong communication skills.
