Grid Operator

The Grid Operator monitors, controls, and maintains the electrical distribution system to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient electricity delivery. This role requires technical expertise, quick decision-making, and coordination with field and engineering teams, supporting 24/7 operations and emergency response.

Responsibilities
- Monitor and control the electrical distribution system in real time using control room software.
- Respond promptly to alarms, system abnormalities, outages, and service interruptions.
- Execute approved switching orders following safety procedures and standards.
- Communicate with field crews, engineering teams, leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Maintain detailed system logs, switching records, and event reports.
- Coordinate outages, service restorations, load transfers, and system maintenance.
- Support reliability, safety, and grid stability by identifying and escalating abnormal trends.
- Review feeder loadings, voltage performance, and system capacity daily.
- Provide real-time updates during system events or severe weather.
- Ensure compliance with safety, operational, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in training, drills, and exercises for storm response and system restoration.
- Liaise with Engineering, Field Operations, and Customer Operations for work orders and switching.
- Support grid modernization initiatives including automation and DER integration.
- Maintain situational awareness of weather, system risks, and field activities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
- Minimum 5–7 years of experience in power system operations or control room environments.
- Previous utility experience in system operations, dispatch, or control room.
- Knowledge of distribution switching, outage management, and safety protocols.
- Familiarity with grid modernization technologies and automation systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems and safety standards.
- Proficiency with SCADA, OMS, and control software.
- Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Strong computer skills and quick learner.
